Short Description:

The safeguarding of the modern metropolitan area, characterized by different structural typologies and exposed to different types of risk, is the main axis of the current sustainable development territory policies, according to the national objectives of the 2030 Agenda and the PNRR program. The estimation of the combined earthquake-fire risk and the optimization of interventions for structures and infrastructures in the context of metropolitan areas is here proposed as a critical theme. Current research involves different disciplinary areas of structural engineering, with partial approaches and clear limits in the results interoperability. In fact, different forms of hazard can affect structures throughout their existence. The occurrence of a seismic event in areas exposed to various risks or already affected by other phenomena is highly probable, especially in countries characterized by high seismicity, such as Italy. Nevertheless, the seismic safety assessment of existing structures/infrastructures is commonly carried out considering the seismic action only, generally applied to an analytical model, neglecting the stress-strain state induced by previous phenomena or without considering the cascading effect related to a different hazard, such as a fire induced by the earthquake.
